Minamata
Yesterday afternoon I went to the South Bank Cinema to see the movie Minamata. It's 1971 and W Eugene Smith (Johnny Deep) known for his numerous photographic essays which was published in Life magazine and also is an recluse. He initially turns down an commission from Robert Hayes(Bill Nighy) to go back to Japan to investigate the Minamata being poisoned but it's only when Aileen (Minami) an Japanese translator urges him to do he goes and he documents what is happening with the mercury poisoning and Minamata disease in the costal areas. The Chemical company Chisso is linked with the poisoning which was caused by industrial pollution and Eugene must win the trust to the broken community which he has to find the images to show the world as well as getting threatened. It is sad, Fantastic and Brilliant with top and Brilliant acting by Johnny Deep, Bill Nighy , Minami and Hiro Sanada . Johnny Depp was one of the producers along with Kevan Thompson, Sam Sarkar and Andrew Levitas who directed the movie as well. This is one of the finest performances that Johnny Depp has given and he does it so well in his own style. I give it 4 stars and it's in the cinemas now so do yourselves an favour and SEE IT which you will be amazed.
