Classic Movies- The Misfits 1961
For the classic movies segment let's have a look at the 1961 movie The Misfits. In Reno Nevada Roslyn Tabor (Marilyn Monroe) is getting an divorce from her husband Raymond(Kevin McCarthy) and lives with her landlady Isabelle (Thelma Ritter( gets friendly with an aging cowboy named Gaylord (Gay) Langland (Clark Gable) and his best friend an driver named Gudio (Eli Wallach) which they both have a liking for her and move to Gudio's half finished desert home which they live together . She also meets Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift) who is an ex-rodeo rider and they start up an business capturing wild horses which gets interesting. It's an FANTASTIC movie with great acting by Clark Gable, marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter with John Houston directing the film and Arthur Miller doing the screenplay who was married to Marilyn Monroe at that time but were about to get divorce. As everyone knows it was sadly the last film for both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe as Clark Gable passed away only 2 weeks after completing the film and Marilyn Monroe passing August 5th 1962 from an drug overdose even though she was did an film for 20th century Fox called Something's Got To Give but was unreleased as she was fired from Fox due to personal troubles she was going through . There was tensions including the heat in the northern Nevada desert as well as the breakdown of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller's marriage as well as her issues with prescription drugs and alcohol as well as turning up late and the production was shut down for 2 weeks August 1960 while she was in hospital for treatment. The film was released February 1st 1961 which it was not an success but it is considered an masterpiece and one of the best movies of the 1960's . The movie holds up very well to this day and just as good today as it did then with great acting and great writing which I have to say it is one the great performances both Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable ever did.
