Classic Albums-Evolution The Hollies

For this week's classic album segment let's have a look at the 1967 album called Evolution by British rock group the Hollies. The recording of the album was held at Abbey Road Studios in London in just 6 days over 3 months from January 11th until March 17th 1967 and it was released on 1st June 1967(same day as the Beatles album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released ) which it went to number 13 in the UK and no 43 in the USA which it was released there on the Epic label as their 1st for that label as they had other stuff released on the Imperial label. It was produced by Ron Richards who had been their producer since 1963 and from this album there was not hit singles on it or EP released in the UK but there was on the US album Carrie Anne was on it and also all the songs were all original written by Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Tony Hicks. Mike Vickers ex member of British pop group Manfred Mann did the arranging, the cover artwork on the album was done by the Fool an Dutch design collective and band who would be influential in the style of psychedelia of the British popular in the late 60s's and the cover photo was done by karl Ferris who has been credited as with the first truly psychedelia photograph for an album cover. It is excellent album with great songs including their version of Have You Ever Loved Somebody which had been an number 48 hit in the UK for the Searchers a year before as well as a single for Paul and Barry Ryan , Stop Right There, The Games We Play, Then The Heartaches Begin and others as well as great harmonies and playing by the group including excellent guitar playing by Tony Hicks who I think is one of the best British guitar players of that era. This album holds up very well to this day and it is still in the shops somewhere in the world to this day so be sure to listen to it.
