Geraldine Fitzgerald(Brisbane Singer)
Just 2 weeks ago on February 9th Brisbane music and entertainment lost another legendary name with the passing of Geraldine Fitzgerald after an short battle with lung cancer. She was on December 18th 1941 in Townsville and Moved to Brisbane when she was 8.Her first experience as an singer was on 4BK Children's Hit Parade with Warren Cox who was to become an well known Brisbane singer was the junior compere which was hosted by Howard Brown. She came third in the Amateur Hour heat in Sydney at age 14 and worked as an secretary at 4BK for Malcolm Searle in the programme department. She appeared on local TV shows including BTQ 7 variety show House Party and the Late Show hosted by Brian Tait, Top of The Town and doing appearances on Bandstand hosted by Brian Henderson throughout the 60's and 70's which some of her performances are on DVD as well as other shows like IMT (In Melbourne Tonight)and the Mike Walsh Show and The True Blue Show. She performed around Brisbane at venues like Cloudland,Wicked Witch, and Queensland including Ipswich at Wonderland, Toowoomba and The Gold Coast and in 1967 along with Gold Coast dup the Sampson Sisters, an Go Go dancer and Merv Oakes an piano accordionist Geraldine performed in Vietnam . She performed on Showcase on Channel 0 (now 10) in 1965 which she reached the finals and had her on TV show on Channel 7 called the Geraldine Fitzgerald Hour. She recorded for the Sunshine label which she had an single called Something To Think About in 1968 and was on the album the Music Of Cloudland Ballroom/The Music of Norwood Ballroom South Adelaide which she sang 2 songs backed up by the Sounds Of Seven. Geraldine went to the UK as the result of an award she won for the 3XY DIGMO (Destroy International Garbage Music Organisation) for Most Promising Artist and she did go for 2 months before coming back to Australia. She continued to do TV appearances as well as club work and retired in the 80's and also lived in japan and America due to her husband being sent there by the company he worked for before coming back to Australia. Made appearances at the Arrows get togethers which it's survivors of Australian music from the 50's and 60's getting together. She has left an great legacy in the history of Brisbane entertainment and Music scene as well as the Australian scene and may it be remembered.
