Classic Albums-Matchbook Ian Moss

For this week's classic album segment let's have a look at the 1989 album Matchbook which was the debut album for guitarist and singer as well as ex Cold Chisel member Ian Moss. this album was recorded at Rhinoceros Recordings in Sydney and Oceanway Studios in Los Angeles California. Matchbook was released in August 1989 which it went to number 1 in Australia where it stayed for 3 weeks and it was Top 20 in New Zealand and it was produced by Ian Moss himself and Chris Lord-Alge who also did the engineering and mixing and assistant engineers were Brendan Morley and Jeff Lord-Alge and also the 6 of the tracks were written by ex Cold Chisel member Don Walker and others were by Ian himself. This album won 5 awards at the ARIAS that were Album Of the Year, Best Male Artist, Breakthrough-Artist Album, Single Of the Year and Breakthrough Artist-Single for Tucker's Daughter and it was from this album it had 4 hit singles Tuckers Daughter,Telephone Booth, Out Of the Fire and Mr Rain and also among the performers who were on the album including Steve preswitch of Cold Chisel, mark Williams who did the backing vocals, Ian Belton of QED and Don Walker. It is a excellent album with great songs as well as great singing and guitar playing by Ian Moss and this holds up very well to this day which it is 25 years this year when this album came out. Ian is still recording and touring to this day and this album is still in the shops so do yourself an favour and BUY It and listen to some great Australian music from the late 80's.

  1. Hi Luke, I was senior technician at Rhino in 1989 when we did Mossy's album. Hard to believe it was 25 years ago. I remember the Lord-Alge brothers well, also Brendan and many others. I had a thrashed old cassette player in the workshop, and many of the mixes that were done in Studio 2 were 'auditioned' for real world playability on my system! Best - Brett.
