Brisbane top 10 December 9th 1962
For this special segment I thought I would do the top 10 on the Brisbane charts 60 years December 9th 1962 and at the time there were an lot of great songs that were in the charts at that time which have become classics and still sounding great today. At the time the main music shows on Brisbane TV were Teen Beat on QTQ 9 hosted by 4BC disc jockey Geoff Atkinson and on Channel 7 Teen Time as well as Swinging School by Dick McCann and the national shows were of course Bandstand hosted by Brian Henderson on Channel 9, the ABC had the Bryan Davies Show and on Channel 7 Sing Sing Sing hosted at that stage by Lionel Long which Johnny O"keefe didn't come on board until February 1963. Let's start the top 10 countdown which we start off with at number 10-
10. Big Girls Don't Cry by the Four Seasons which was the follow up to Sherry and it was an number 1 in the USA as well as Australia at that time. it had leaped 10 spots from number 20 as it was there the week before
at number 9 it was Limbo Rock by Chubby Checker who continued to have an string of hits at this period including Let's Twist Again and had came to Australia in January that with year with Bobby Rydell and Del Shannon which was the last tour promoted by Lee Gordon which they did the Festival Hall in Brisbane January 13th 1962
at number 8 was Telstar by British group the Tornados which included Clem Cattini on drums and on bass Heinz Burt who would go on to have achieve solo success with Just Like Eddie and Country Boy . The Tornados were the first British group to have an number 1 in the USA which was an year and an bit before the Beatles and the British Invasion really dominated the American charts.
At Number 7 was the Swiss Maid by Del Shannon which was an cover of the Roger Miller song which he did that as Fair Swiss Maiden the year before and Del was having an string of hits at this time period having started the year before Runaway. He toured Australia with Bobby Rydell and Chubby Checker in January that year having done Festival Hall Brisbane January 13th
At Number 6 was Alley Cat by Bent Fabric who would have turned 98 on Wednesday as he passed away 2 years ago
At number 5 was Frank Ifield with Lovesick Blues which was an cover of an 1922 song which Hank Williams had an country hit with it in 1949 and it was at this time period that Frank Ifield was having great success in the UK starting with I Remember You and also Lovesick Blues was number 1 in the UK as well as number 44 in the USA.
At number 4 was the Cha Cha Cha by Bobby Rydell who I had mentioned with Chubby Checker and Del Shannon toured Australia that included Brisbane on January 13th at the Festival Hall and was having an string of hits at that time.
At number 3 was Working For the Man with the b side Leah By Roy Orbison who was having an string of hits at the time including Only The Lonley, Running Scared, Dream Baby and Crying.
At number 2 was Dance With the Guitar Man by Duane Eddy which he wrote that with Lee Hazelwood and the Blossoms were the backing vocals with Anita Kerr doing the arranging
At number 1 is the Lonely Bull by the Tijuana Brass featuring Herb Alpert and this was the song that launched Herb Alpert on the music scene which he is still going today. Sol Lake wrote the song and it was produced by Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert.
