Bobby Wilde(Bobby Wilde and the Raiders/The Dominoes)
Yesterday morning on my way to work I recieved an message on Facebook by Mike Steiner who was from the Brisbane rock group The Dominoes (with Darryl Wright,George Savva and Lew Noyes) to tell me that Bobby Wilde the lead singer passed away the night before which I was shocked to hear it and I posted it on the Brisbane rock n roll scene of the 50's and 60's. He was born Bobby Halliwell November 3rd 1941 and was singing around for a while when in the early 60's formed the band Bobby Wilde and the Raiders with Darryl Wright(the Tornadoes), Lew Noyes, Tommy Flanagan and Tony Heathcote which their first gig was at the Enoggera RSL/Church Hall as well as the suburban Dance Halls including Keperra Theatre and Pub gigs as well as an country tour of Queensland with Tommy Dee and the Nundah Memorial Hall Friday Night Teen dance that they shared with another Brisbane group the Saxons that had Lester Vickary on guitar and George Saava on tenor saxophone and Tommy Flanagan left which Lester, George and John Hanlon joined the band which then in September 1962 the Dominoes were formed with that line up. The Dominoes played at the Nundah Memorial Hall in between 1962-63 which they were played with Australian acts including Warren Williams, Johnny Chester, The De Kroo Brothers and many others as well as Wynnum and for the next nearly 3 years played @ TC's which was in the city on Elizabeth Street where the old Theatre Royal was based which by 1964 the Dominoes were the resident band there as the Planets who were the main band there since May 26th 1963 went to Teen City and Bobby who not only sang with the Dominoes but also was the compere there as well as having a day job as an projectionist and also even was an assistant manager at TC's. The Dominoes lasted until 1967 and reformed in 1992 which they played at the Rock and Roll Reunions which would last until 2015 as well as the 50th anniversary show @ the Redlands Multi Sports Club Friday December 7th 2012 which had Darryl Wright, Lew Noyes, Lester Vikcary, George Savva, Peter Novak who joined in the 90's and Mike Steiner who joined them in 1963 along with Bill Weston an Brisbane singer from the 60's as well as in the audience were Paul Fox who played in the Beachies(Brisbane 60's group) and Jimmy Hannon who played in the Escorts (Brisbane 60's group). I first saw the Dominoes at the Marquee in Coolangatta during Wintersun Wednesday June 6th 2007 which they were one of the support acts with Wanda Jackson, the Old Rockers Get Together at Riverside Ballroom Sunday March 27th 2011, Sunday April 7th 2013 and Sunday May 18th 2014 and Broncos Leagues Club Sunday July 12th 2015 and I met Bobby on Sunday April 7th 2013 which I got his autograph and Sunday May 18th 2014 got photos with him which was an honour and also he was a nice man as well as an great singer and great entertainer. Another icon of the Brisbane rock scene of the 50's and 60's has passed but his legacy with Bobby Wilde and the Raiders and the Dominoes(2) will be remembered and not forgotten as it is important to preserve that history. Vale Bobby Wilde(Halliwell) and thank you for the memories and the legacy.
