Danny Mayers (The Delltones)

Just last week I saw on Facebook that Danny Mayers who was the lead singer of the iconic Australian singing group the Delltones from 1982-85 and from 1995 until 2011 passed away from kidney disease which was a shock and sad. Danny was from Lancashire England where he was doing jazz gigs with a group in The Graduates and in 1970 he came to Australia which he lived in Newcastle where he sang with an group called Custom 5 which then became Nevada in about 1974 which Danny came up with the name and would last until 1980 which they recorded for EMI as they released 2 singles that included their version of the Shaun Cassidy song That's Rock & Roll that went to number 3 in Newcastle. Danny performed with the 12 piece band Slippery When Wet which had Sydney session musicians by the early 1980's and in 1982 was asked to joined the Delltones when Pee Wee Wilson saw him perform at the Palais Royale in Newcastle which he joined as he would be with them the first time round from 1982-95 which he was on 2 live albums Bop Till Ya Drop which was an huge success and Out In The Open and the studio album Tickled Pink which went to number 95 on the Australian charts as well as an Christmas EP All These Things and More and left them at the end of 1985. Danny played in Night Flight and in 1995 rejoined the Delltones which he would be with them for 16 years as they released 2 Live albums the Big Four O which also had studio recordings as well in 1998 celebrating 40 years of formation and in 2008 the Bopa Doo Wop A Live In Concert celebrating 50 years of formation and also the studio album The Sunshine Club. In 2009 released his very first solo album 19 Longfield Street CD which was produced by Duncan Wood who was from Touchwood Productions and 2011 Danny left the Delltones for the 2nd time which he then performed solo shows as well as performing in the Danny Mayers Band as well as performing with the Yakaty Yak tribute show as well as doing an Tribute to the Delltones and also performed shows with Tony Worsley and Issi Dye and also did an Cliff Richard tribute show. In 2016 Danny released his 2nd and last CD The Simple Things I saw Danny with the Delltones at Kedron Wavell Saturday March 24th 2007, Seagulls Wednesday June 4th 2008 during Wintersun, Kedron Wavell Saturday July 26th 2008, Seagulls Friday June 5th 2009 during Wintersun, Mt Gravatt Bowls Club Friday September 4th 2009 and Kedron Wavell Friday April 9th 2010 and then saw him solo at Cooly Rocks On Sunday June 10th 2018 at the Jack Harbour Stage and the Tribute to the Delltones during Cooly Rocks On on Saturday June 8th 2019 which by then the tribute act had former Delltones member Woody Finlayson on guitar, Wynnum Bowls Club with Issi Dye Sunday December 13th 2020 and Friday January 15th 2021 singing 2 songs with Issi Dye Higher and Higher and Up On The Roof. I got photos with Danny in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and chatted with him sometimes which we had conversations in 2020 and 2021 at Wynnum Bowls Club which he was a very nice man. Danny has left an great legacy with his work in the Delltones which will live on forever and he had a great voice loud but great as well as an great entertainer getting the crowds to sing along to the songs as well as I already mentioned a very nice man. He will be missed by his family, friends and fans and thank you for the music.
