Classic Albums-Ricky by Ricky nelson

This week's classic albums segment let's have an look at the debut album by American rock singer Ricky Nelson called Ricky in 1958. Ricky Nelson had been on the entertainment scene since the late 40's when he appeared on his Parents' radio show the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet show which eventually switched to TV in 1952 that would last until 1966 and there had been an movie called Here Comes the Nelsons in the same in 1952 which was an success. Ricky had been playing drums and clarinet in his tweens and early teens and it was as an result while dating an girl who was swooning over an ELvis Presley record one night that Ricky wanted to make an record too which he recorded for the Verve label as he released I'm Walkin(the Fats Domino song)(no 4 USA) with the B side A teenager's Romance (no 2 USA)and You're My one and Only Love(no 14). Ricky left Verve due to disputes about royalties and signed up with Imperial for 5 years which his first hit for that label was be Bop baby which went to no 3 USA that sold over 1 Million copies and the recording of the album that was to become Ricky began @ masters Recorders from August 16th 1957 until October 1st. It was released that same month which went to the number 1 spot in the USA on January 25th 1958 where it stayed there for 2 weeks. It is an excellent album with great material and it's an mixture of rock, pop, rockabilly and old standards from the 1920's and it hold up very well today in 2012. Ricky sings really well on this album and the back up vocals on it were the Jordanaires who were working with Elvis Presley at that time as well back up band that included Joe Maphis, Howard Roberts, Roger Renner and others but James Burton is not on this album but would be on the next album which was Ricky nelson which would last until about 1967 as he would play on many of Ricky's big hits that would include Poor Little Fool, it's Late, Believe What you Say, Travelin man, Hello MArylou and others. From this album onwards up to the 60's Ricky Nelson would become one of the top acts in the rock n roll era and it's hard to believe that even though he's been gone for nearly 27 years his work has endured as well as which it's great stuff and the songs are so good.

  1. Hi Luke,

It all this information written down, 'cos it is very well researched. Most of this I wasn't aware of.

I was reading up on the Million Dollar Quartet (Sun records' Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins) from December 4, 1965. There are some similarities in regards to knowing people in both of these cases. Maybe you should do a blog entry on this too.
