Max Merritt and the Meteors Been Away too Long
Been Away Too Long is the live album by legendary group Max Merritt and the Meteors that was recorded in 1969. the Melbourne music scene in the late 60's was vibrant and at it's peak and the venues were places like Berties, Sebastian's, the Thumpin Tum , Village Green Hotel and others and bands like Max Merritt and the Meteors, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Zoot, Masters Apprentices and others would play many gigs an night. Spectra which it is Melbourne's south east suburbs was an biweekly dance which was created and promoted by teacher Martin Cook that carted for the high school kids and also it would rotated between Waverley and Ashwood high schools. it was on one dance night late in 1969 at Ashwood High School after clearing it with Martin Cook, Brian Lewis, his brother David and some friends recorded Max Merritt and the Meteors performance on an reel to reel tape recorder with Max's permission and that recording had been heard until now with it being out on CD. It's an BRILLIANT and an excellent CD with an totally Brilliant by Max Merritt and the Meteors doing an great set of soul songs, his own songs and an excellent version of Kush totally BRILLLIANT. Brian Lewis produced this CD, his Brother David the recording engineer and Greg Youngman did the digital remastering. it is great to see this live recording out on CD and Max Merritt were one of the top bands in Australia at that time even though they were formed in NEw Zealand in 1956 as well as having great musicians Stewie Speer on Drums, Bob Bertles who had played with Johnny O'Keefe and the Dee Jays from 1958-63 on saxophone and flute and on bass guitar Dave Russell who had come from Ray Columbus and the Invaders back in the 60's another NZ group who were popular in Australia. It's an must for any AUstralian and NZ music fans as well as fans of Max merritt and the Meteors which I am sure you will enjoy listening to this live CD and I am giving this 5 stars which it's somewhere in the shops now
