Vale John Bogie
2 weeks ago Australian music lost an another music icon with the passing of John Bogie drummer of the Joy Boys who backed up Australian singer Col Joye as well as having successful instrumentals on their own. The Joy Boys began as the KJ Quintet with Col Joye(jacobsen) with his brother Kevin, Drummer John Bogie, guitarist Dave Bridge and saxophonist Laurie Erwin who played local dances and wedding around Sydney and eventually became the Joy Boys at the advice of a clairvoyant. John was with the Joy Boys until 1969 and played on many of Col Joye's big hits like Bye Bye Baby, Rockin Rollin Clementine, Oh yeah Uh Huh which he used the typewriter, Yes Sir That's My Baby, Bad Man as well as the instrumentals that the Joy boys had hits with in the 60's like Smokey Mokes, Southern Aurora, murphy the surfie etc. John was the prankster and the joker of the group and toured with lloyd Price, Bobby vee, The Everly brothers, Gene Vincent, Johnny Cash, Fabian, Connie Francis, Ricky nelson and many others. After leaving the Joy Boys John became the entertainment manager of the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club which he was there from 1970 until 2003 and also played there as an bandleader and drummer. I got to meet John @ Coolangatta Bowls Club during Wintersun on Saturday June 12th 2004 as he was in the audience of the Dave Bridge Trio/Johnny Devlin/Ray Hoff show and when the Dave Bridge Trio performed with Ron Kitchin doing the lead vocals John came on stage playing on an few songs including oh Yeah Uh Huh which it was excellent and during one of the intervals I got autographs from Ray Hoff, Dave Bridge and John and photos with Dave and John which it was an honor and an thrill and also John and Dave told stories about the famous rockers they worked with which were good to listen to and also John was in the audience at next night's show when barry Stanton was supposed to play there but did'nt so instead Alan Dale(Australian Rock Singer), Ray Hoff, Ray Burton(the Executives), the Dave Bridge Trio, Scott Dann and an girl duo were performing that night. During Wintersun 2009 at the Breakfast With the Stars @ Coolangatta Surf Club on Thursday June 4th Ron Kitchin mentioned the John Bogie was not well which was sad to heat and at the 2010 Wintersun which was the last one @ Coolangatta I asked Dave Bridge prior to the Cliff and the Shadows show starting at the Classic Holiday Stage about John Bogie which he mentioned that he was'nt well. i heard about John's passing on Lonnie Lee's facebook page which was sad to hear. I was very lucky to have met John Bogie as well as having the photo with him which is something I will never forget. may the music he made with Col joye and the Joy Boys live on forever.
