Classic Albums-Brothers In Arms Dire Straits

for this week's classic album segment let's have an look at the 1985 album by british band Dire Straits called Brothers In Arms. This was their 5th album as they had been on the music scene since 1979 and the recording of the album began in November 1984 at the Air Studios in Montserrat west Indies, Air Studios London and Power Station In NEw York which lasted until March 1985. The album was released on may 13th 1985 which it went to no 1 in the UK where it stayed there for 10 weeks, no 1 in the USA where it stayed there for 9 weeks, no 1 in Australia for 34 weeks, no 1 in the Sweden, Switzerland,Norway,France,New Zealand, Germany and Canada etc, no 2 in the Netherlands and no 4 in Italy and it has sold over 30 million copies. The album was produced by Mark Knopfler the guitarist in Dire Straits and Neil Dorfsman and from the album it had the hit singles Money For Nothing, So Far Away and Walk Of Life. During the making of the album guitarist Hal Lindes had left which New York guitarist Jack Sonni played on the album and Andy Kanavan played on the album but were not official members credited on the album and also this album was one of the first to be directed at the CD market as well as the first CD's to sell 1 million copies which it outsold the vinyl as well. The album won 2 Grammys for Best Engineered Recording Non Classical and for the song Money For Nothing for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and in 2006 when it was re-released won Best Surround Sound Album. It's an FABULOUS album with great songs and an great sound with the BRILLIANT guitar playing by Mark Knopfler and it still endures as well as sounding great today as it did back in 1985. the session musicians who were on the album were Sting who did the background vocals , randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker and Malcolm Duncan playing the tenor saxophones, Tony Levin and Neil Jason were the bass guitarists, Dave Plews played the horns and Michael Mainieri played the vibraphone and this album is one of the biggest selling albums of all time which it's in the shops somewhere in the world.
