Classic Movies Sweet Smell Of Success
For this week's classic movies segment I'm looking at the 1957 movie Sweet Smell Of Success . Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) is an an scheming press agent who is oblivious to the whole whirlwind of street vendors, call girls and con men and JJ Hunseeker (Burt Lancaster) is an newspaper columnist who plans to ruin the relationship of his sister (Susan Harrison) and an jazz musician Steve Dallas (Martin Milner) through his connections and it gets interesting. It's an FANTASTIC movie with FANTASTIC acting by Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner, Jeff Donnell and Barbara Nichols as well as an uncredited appearance by David White who would go on to great success as Larry Tate in the American TV comedy show Bewitched playing Elwell as well as appearance by American jazz musician Chico Hamilton. It was directed by Alexander Mackendrick who also did the screenplay (uncredited) with Cliff Odets and Ernest Lehman and produced by James Hill. Elmer Bernstein did the music and it was released through United Artist with the production company Heicht Hill Lancaster Productions which was Burt Lancaster's production company along with Harold Hecht and James Hill. It was released in the USA june 27th 1957 and England in July which was poorly received but it has improved over the years and it is appreciated after all these with the cinematography and screenplay. AN classic movie indeed and should be watched more often which the movie holds up very well to this day.
