Ellen Savage and the Heroes of AHS Centaur Grantlee Keiza

On May 14th 1943 the Australian hospital ship AHS Centaur on it's way to Port Morseby was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off Brisbane's coast which it sank in 3 minutes and 268 people with 64 survived which among them was the only nurse who survived Ellen Savage who despite having horrfic injuries spent 34 hours in the shark infested waters helping the wounded and defying the odds until help came and would get the George Medal due to her courage which is it now released with the book written by Grantlee Kieza and besides from the sinking it also talks about Ellen's upbringing in the bush in NSW, studied at Newcastle Hospital and Crown Street Women's Hospital, worked for Baby Health Centre in Tamworth, joined the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1941 as well as her life after the Centaur as well as those who survived the sinking and many others. It is sad, Amazing, Brilliant and touching with amazing and brilliant stories which it is well worth a read. It is nearly 83 years since the centaur sanked and nearly 17 years since it was found and Grantlee Kieza who has written books about Bert Hinkler, Matthew Flinders and Australian Boxing has done an Fantastic job doing the research and the photos of the people on it are jsut amazing. I give it 4 stars as it is in the shops now so please do yourselves a favour and BUY IT which you will be impressed and amazed.
