Kay Howick

On Easter Monday April 21st I saw on Facebook that BAY FM 100.3 radio personality Kay Howick passed away which was annouced by her daughter Nellie and I was shocked to see that as I wasn't excepting that. I first met Kay Howick on the BAY FM Office in Thornlands on Tuesday March 7th 2006 as I was with the disability group Crossroads which I was in the ICAN Group as we visited the station which she showed us what they do and she was impressed with my knowledge about rock and roll which led to me getting the guest stint on Kay's show on Saturday Good Timez Rock n Roll on Saturday April 8th 2006 and would do 3 more visits to the station on Saturday May 13th, Sunday June 24th and July 15th which I spoke some up of the time about the shows I've seen at the time and towards the end of my time there I even got to read what songs were played which was an great experience. Kay asked me to get a Johnny Preston CD for her as he was playing at Wintersun that time at Twin Towns which I saw that show on Saturday June 3rd 2006 and I got to get 2 CD's one for me and one for her and also to those who don't know the name Johnny Preston he was an American singer who had the hit single Running Bear in 1960 written by the Big Bopper (JP Richardson) who had the song Chantilly Lace. I lent Kay some of my music books which she gave them back to me and the other thing with Kay was that she played an part of my getting the phone call from Australian singer Merv Benton who had the hit single Cincinatti Fireball in 1965 which she met up with my Mum and Dad at Coolangatta during Wintersun to organize it which I got the phone call on Wednesday June 14th 2006 as I did not know that was going to be an phone call but that afternoon I was in the bedroom when Heath my brother handed me the phone and I said Hello which the voice said "Hello Luke This is Merv Benton" and it was an surprise but it was an great experience which we talked for a while as he was coming to Melbourne to do an show there and also got another phone call from Merv Monday August 21st 2006. My guest stint with BAY FM 100.3 ended Saturday July 15th 2006 but would see Kay over the years including Wintersun which she gave me an lift back to Bella Mare on Wednesday June 6th 2007 after seeing Wanda Jackson as it was wet that night as well as compering shows including Gabe Phoenix and Leisa Kerris at the Tweed Civic Centre Wednesday June 9th 2010, Greazefest, Rock and Roll Get Together at the Riverside Ballroom, Kedron Wavell and the last time I saw Kay in person was Saturday June 24th 2023 at the Koala Tavern Capalaba where we saw Ross Wilson perform and also had been connected through Facebook for many years. Kay will be missed by her family and her friends as well as the Radio scene as well as the music scene which she was an wonderful lady and always very helpful as well as being an great supporter to the music scene in Brisbane and also very much respected by everyone who knew her which may her legacy on Brisbane community radio be remembered.
