Steve Neale

Last week Brisbane rock and roll lost an well known music figure with the passing of keyboard player Steve Neale who was from the Brisbane groups the Planets and the Sounds of Seven. Steve had played in the Brisbane Rock group the Hucklebucks which would feature Planets members Brian Gagen, Johnny Pal, John Reid and Bobby Rich(Richards)and joined the Planets not long after they were formed in 1959 which he would be with them for the next 6 years as he would be there till the end in 1965 and throughout those years played at Cloudland, the Gold Coast, Railway Institute, Sandgate, Festival Hall, Ahepa Hall from 1961-62, City Hall every Tuesday nights from 1962 until 1963, Birdland which they leased the building from the council and started October 26th 1962 until the very last gig there December 20th 1963, TC's from May-December 1963 as they were first Brisbane rock group to play there and again for a time in 1965, Teen City from January 3rd 1964 until March 13th 1965 and many oth

The Radiators @ Cleveland Sands Hotel

Last night I went to the Cleveland Sands Hotel to see the legendary Australian rock band The Radiators which it is my 3rd time seeing them as the first was at the Countdown Spectacular 2 at the Brisbane Entertainment Center Tuesday August 21st 2007 and the second was at Kedron Wavell Friday October 1st 2010. I caught the bus to Cleveland, walk to the Sands Hotel, went to the Bistro, rang home, ordered my meal and did writing. Had chicken schentizel, chips and salad for dinner, drank 2 Coke with No Sugars, ate Chocolate Brownie for desert, paid for my meals, went inside, did writing and the support act Upsize who are an Brisbane band come on at 8.30pm which they did an of mainly their own songs which they sounded great. There was an interval where I bought Coke with No Sugar, drank it and use my mobile. Classic Album- Northern Lights-Southern Cross by the Band

For the classic album segment which I have not done for 3 years let's have a look at the 1975 album Northern Lights-Southern Cross by rock group the Band. The album was recorded in Zumba Beach California at their studio Shangri-La from spring to summer 1975 and it was the first album in 4 years that had original songs written by Robbie Robertson as they did the Moondog Matinee album in 1973 doing covers of rock songs from the 50's and 60's as well as recording with Bob Dylan on 2 albums. From the album had the hit single Ophelia which went to number 62 in the album and the album was released on November 1st 1975 which went to number 26 in the USA and number 27 in Canada. The Band produced the album and it is an great album with great songs which besides from Ophelia there is some great ones including It Makes No Difference with great vocals by Rick Danko and Acacia Driftwood which they hold up very well to this day and sound as great now as it did back then wh

Ego The Michael Gudinski Story Soundtrack

This is the soundtrack album of the upcoming documentary about Australian music executive and promoter as well as founder of Mushroom Records Michael Gudinski and this 3 CD set it has the classic songs from the Mushroom era including I hear Motion by the Motions, I Remember When I Was Young by Matt Taylor, some of the Skyhooks songs, some of the Hunters and Collectors songs and some live recordings. It is FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT and SUPERB with FANTASTIC songs which has stood the test of time which they still sound great today as it did back then and these are songs you can never get tired off. The upcoming documentary about Michael Gudinski will be released on August 31st and it is well worth seeing as it is must for Australian music fans. The soundtrack album has entered the Australian charts at number 18 this week and it is a must for Australian music fans too which I give the album 5 stars as it's in the shops now so do yourselves an favour and BUY IT which you will love it. Sun 1972

In August 1972 Australian progressive jazz rock group Sun released their one and only album called Sun 1972 on the RCA label which was produced by Horst Liepolt who went on to form the Sweet Basil nightclub in New York and this was the group that had Renee Geyer who would go on to a very successful solo career. The group lasted an few years and the album is now finally out on CD which it has been released by Aztec Records as an double CD. Besides from the original tracks on the album on the first CD and on the second CD it has the rehearsal tapes which has versions of the songs that were on the album as well some that were not. It is FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT and SUPERB with FANTASTIC songs which holds up very well and still sounds great to this day which another great effort by Gil Matthews from Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and Ian McFarlane did the liner notes. This afternoon I went to the Denedy Cinema at Coorparoo to see the movie The Miracle Club. It's 1967 in Dublin Ireland and 3 ladies Eileen Dunne (Kathy Bates), Lily Fox (Maggie Smith) and Dolly Hennessey(Agnes O'Casey) are in an talent quest for the church to win an voucher to go to Lourdes France where they do miracles there which draws millions of people there and then Chrissy Ahearn(Laura Linney) who is the daughter of their friend Maureen who passed away arrives for her funeral and despite oppotions from the ladies' husbands they go to Lourdes which each woman's past will reopen old wounds and have to find an way to confront their past as they travel for the miracle and then it gets interesting. It's excellent, very impressive and very entertaining with great acting by Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Agnes O'Casey, Stephen Rae who plays Eileen's husband Frank, Mark McKenna who plays Dolly's husband George and Brenda Fricker is the voice of Chrissi

Still Shining by Marica Hines

This is the new compilation of legendary Australian singer Marcia Hines and on this CD it has the hits from the 70's up to the 90's including You, From The Inside, Fire And Rain, Your Love Still Brings Me To My Knees and many others as well as 2 new songs Last One Standing and hard To Breathe as well as the song Jokers and Queens which she did with Jon English. It is FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT and SUPERB with FANTASTIC songs which has stood the test of time and they still sound great today after all these years as great songs just get better with time. Marcia is currently on tour going through regional Australia which she she had played Twin Towns on Friday night and is also going to do the Grease musical later in the year. This is an must for Marcia Hines fans and I give it 4 and an half stars as it's in the shop[s now so do yourselves an favour and BUY IT which you will be impressed and amazed.

This is the biography of Kiwi Singer-songwriter as well as member of legendary bands Split Enz and Crowded House Neil Finn written by Jeff Apter and in this book talks about Neil's upbringing in Te Awamutu, played in the band After Hours, joined Split Enz that had his brother Tim in 1977 who would achieve great success in New Zealand and Australia, formed Crowded House in 1985 who would achieve great success in Australia, New Zealand and overseas and would last until 1996, his solo career, playing with Fleetwood Mac, the passing of Paul Hester and many others.It is excellent, very impressive and very entertaining with great and impressive stories which is well worth an read and Jeff Apter who wrote an book about the Finn Brothers (Neil and Tim) more than 10 years ago does an great job as always with great research and another job well done. Asteroid City

On Sunday I went to the South Bank Cinema to see the movie Asteroid City. It's 1955 and in the desert town of Asteroid City lives different people including photographer Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman) who is an widower with 3 daughters and an son, Stanley Zak(Tom Hanks) who is Augie's father in law, Midge Campbell an actress(Scarlett Johansson), Motel Manager(Steve Carrell), host of the anthology Series about Asteriod City(Bryan Cranston)and Schubert Green an director(Adrian Brody). There is an convention for the Junior Stagazer/Space Cadets and the people encounter with an ailen (Jeff Goldblum) which Augie takes the photo and then it gets interesting. It is excellent, very funny and very entertaining with great acting by Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson), Steve Carrell, Adrian Brody, Bryan Cranston,Jason Schwartzman, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Willem Dafoe, margot Robbie and many others. Greazefest 2023

On Sunday August 6th I went to the Redland Showground in Cleveland to attend Greazefest 2023 which I have been going there for 15 years when it was at Souths League Club in Westend. My dad took me to the Bus Stop, waited, caught 250 bus, got off at Cleveland and walk to the showground. Went to the toilet, rang home and saw Jacques who I know from the rockabilly gigs. The first act on stage were the Smokin Firebirds who did an fantastic set doing rockabilly blues which they were FANTATSIC, took photos, saw Nina and her fiance Wayne, bought Coke with No Sugar and drank it. Peaches and the AlphaSonics were the next act which they did an FANTASTIC set doing an mixture of original songs as well as covers by Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Dakota Staton and Lisl really belt the songs so very well with great playing by the guys including Paulie Burke on double bass and Trevor on drums, had Nachos for lunch and drank Coke with No Sugar. The Lockdown Sessions Roger Waters

This is the new CD by Roger Waters from Pink Floyd and these are home recordings that he did during lockdown due to Covid which these songs are re-recordings of songs he did with Pink Floyd and 1 solo song and it was done 2020-21 period. It is an excellent album with great songs and they sound great too which Roger does it very well. It was released in December 2022 in England and parts of the world and it was released here in Australia and New Zealand in May-June this year. Roger produced the album with Gus Seyffert who is an musician who also did the mixing and engineeering as well as playing on the album with the other musicians too. Roger has an new album coming up in October with the Dark Side Of The Moon Redux which he has recorded tracks of the original album he did with Pink Floyd 50 years ago and has 2 shows at the London Palladium in October and an South American tour later that month. This is an must for Pink Floyd fans and I give it 4 stars as it's in the shops now

Home Again Carole King

On May 26th 1973 American singer-songwriter Carole King who had great success in 1971 with Tapestry and was weeks away from releasing the album Fantasy when she performed at Central Park which producer Lou Adler filmed and produced the show but it was never released until recently and it is now out on CD as well as being an documentary about the show and on the live CD performs some of the songs from the Tapestry album as well as tracks from Fantasy in front of 100,000 people. It is an FANTATSIC CD with great songs and the sound quality is just FANTASTIC too and it is well worth listening to as Carole King was at an creative peak at the time. This is an must for Carole King fans and I give it 4 stars as it's in the shops now so do yourselves an favour and BUY IT which you will be impressed and amazed.

Rivers Run Dry by Ian Moss

This is the new album by Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist Ian Moss and this was recorded in Sydney at Rancom St Studios, Oceanic Studios and Point Blank Studios which was done in 10 days. The songs are mainly written by Ian Moss with people including Troy Casser Daly, Don Walker and Kerry Jacobsen, 1 song written by Kerry jacobsen and an cover of an Stevie Wonder song called Blame It On The Sun which his son Julian duets with Ian and Kasey Chambers also an duet with Ian on Bury Me. It is an FANTASTIC album with great songs with great playing and singing by Ian who is still sounding great as ever and it has gone to number 18 on the Australian charts which it's great to see. Ian starts his tour on Saturday in Brisbane at the Tivoli as well as doing the Whitsundays at the end of this months and through the next few months will be performing at the festivals.
