The United States Vs Billie Holiday
Yesterday I went to the Dendy Cinema to see the movie The United States vs Billie Holiday and American jazz singer Billie Holiday (Andra Day) is getting targeted by the FBI due to her singing Strange Fruit which it's about lynching and they try to stop her singing the song which she refuses. Then agent Harry J Anslinger (Garret Hedlund) along with the other agents then plan to arrest her for drugs as they considered her an threat and then she does an concert with Louis Armstrong which afterwards soldier Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes ) sees Billie which he see doing drugs and also then she is arrested with Joe (Melvin Gregg) for drugs which she is sentenced to a year's jail. Jimmy turned out to be an agent not an soldier and Billie gets released after a year which starts performing at Carnegie Hall in New York to a sellout crowd and has to sing in clubs as she is not able to get her cabaret card which she is getting into the drugs again and Jimmie is having an liking for Billie which then gets interesting . It's sad BBRILLIANT and SUPERB with an FANTASTIC and BRILLIANT performance by Andra Day who was nominated for an Best Actress Oscar as well as FANTASTIC performances by Garret Hedlund, Trevante Rhodes, Evan Ross (who is the son of legendary soul singer Diana Ross), Leslie Jordan, Natasha Lyonne as Tallulah Bankhead and Rob Morgan. It's directed by Lee Daniels who also produced it with Jordan Fudge, Tucker Tooley, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Pamela Oas Williams and Suzan-Lori Parks did the screenplay. It's 62 years since Billie Holiday passed away but has left an great legacy of music and the son strange fruit was inducted in the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1978 where it was named Song Of the Century and this movie is an history lesson in a way as to look what America was at the time with the racial problems as well as how times were different to what is now. I give this 4 and an half stars as it's currently running in the cinemas so do yourselves an favour and SEE IT which you will be amazed and impressed as well as to understand .
