classic Albums- Whispering Jack John Farnham

For this week's classic album segment let's have a look at the 1986 album by Australian singer John Farnham with Whispering Jack. John Farnham had success in the 60's and early 70's with hits like Sadie The Cleaning Lady, One, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, Don't You Know It's MAgic but then by the mid 70's his recording career had dwindled so he turned to tv and musical theatre as well as going through financial trouble with unpaid taxes as well as performing in the cabaret scene but came back in 1980 with his version of the Beatles song Help which went to number 8 and then in 1982 joined the Little River Band replacing Glenn Shorrock which he was with them until 1985 as he sang lead on Playing To Win, The Other Guy, Down On the Border and others. He had been collecting a song list for a future solo album while in LRB so he finished the vocals on the album No Reins which he would leave in late 1985 and his first solo stuff were live shows as he had not done solo since 1981 with his own band that had LRB member Derek Pellicci on drums, and both Sam See and Brett Garsed on guitars. Then in early 1986 Ross Fraser an sound engineer had suggested to Glenn Wheatley (ex Masters Apprentices) who had been managing LRB as well as John Farnham to make an solo album and that would lead to the recording of the album that would become known as Whispering Jack. The recording of it was held @ AAV Studios in Melbourne from April-June 1986 and it was released on October 20th 1986 which it went to number 1 where it stayed for 25 weeks as well as number 1 in Sweden, number 2 in NEW Zealand, number 3 in Switzerland and number 12 in Norway as well as becoming the highest selling album in Australia by an Australian and as of 2006 it was 24xPlatnium indicating sales of 1.68 million units in Australia alone. Ross Fraser was the producer with Doug Brady doing the engineering and assisted by Michael Wickow. From the album it had 4 hit singles- You're The Voice, Pressure Down, A Touch Of Paradise and Reasons and actually Glenn Wheatley had mortgaged his house to help pay the recording of the album which it payed off as well as the name Whispering Jack came was that while he was visiting the USA Farnham was mistakenly introduced as JAck Phantom so he then called himself Whispering Jack Phantom after Whispering Ted Lowe who was a commentator on the show Pot Black when he did a commentary for a local pool game. It is a GREAT GREAT album with BRILLIANT songs which holds up so well to this day and the songs still gets played to this day which besides from those 4 hits they are other great tracks like Going Going Gone. This album restarted John Farnham's career and it was the start of a very successful period for him which would continue throughout the remaining of the 80's 90's,2000's and up to now. This album is on of the great Australian albums of all time as well as one of John Farnham's best albums and it is still in the shops to this day so be sure to buy it and listen to it as it is great music and timeless.
