Just 2 weeks ago on Thursday december 16th while I was at work having an break I had an look at Facebook on my mobile and I saw the news that legendary Australian singer/musician/Songwriter/record producer Rob EG aka Robie Porter had passed away after an battle of dementia and I was shocked to hear to see that. Robie Porter began recording for Rex with Your Cheatin Heart in 1959 and then in 1960 released 2 singles for Pye records Do You love Me/Whiplash and My First Love/Railroadin. From 1962-64 had successful singles with Festival both instrumentals including Si Senor, Jezebel, 5-4-3-2-1-Zero, 55 Days At Peking and When You're Not Near (Vocal) and albums including Playing Hawaiian Guitar and the Voice and The Guitar The Vocal and Instrumental Hits of Rob EG. He was one of the regulars on the music Bandstand as well as Six O'Clock Rock as well as Hit Scene later on and toured with Chubby Checker and Helen Shapiro. He also hosted TV shows including Opportunity Knocks and Surf Sound and went to England and America in the 60's where he continued to record but did not achieve any more chart hits as well as doing TV shows like Daniel Boone, Mannix, Malibu U and the movie three. Came back to Australia in 1970 where he purchased an controlling share of Sparmac the Independent record label which he released 3 singles himself Gemini(number 28 Australia), Santa Claus and Try To Find More Love(number 90) and began producing as well as managing and producing bands including Daddy Cool, Healing Force, Gerry and the Joy band and Rick Springfield and also launched the Wizard label in 1973 which he produced Hush, Marcia Hines, Julie Anthony, The Studs and many others. He also produced Air supply's album Lost In Love as well as Tommy Emmanuel and was based in America where he did tv production as well as horse breeding and formed an another label called Musique in 2006. He came back to Australia in 2013 and started back performing in 2014 which up until Covid he performing around Australia including the Go Show Gold tour in 2019. I saw Rob EG at the Go Show Gold at the QPAC Concert Hall in Brisbane on Thursday May 2nd 2019 and he came on stage in the second set which he 2 of his 60's hits Jezebel and 55 Days At Peking which he was great and I am very glad that to see him live which was an experience but never got to meet him . It is sad that Robie Porter (Rob EG) has passed away but he has left an incredible legacy of music he made as an performer as well as the ones he produced and should be considered an ARIA hall of Fame induction for the impact he made on Australian music. Thank for the legacy and may the great music live on forever.
