Shirl the life of legendary larrikin Graeme 'Shirley' Strachan is the biography of legendary Australian entertainer and lead singer of 70's Australian rock group Skyhooks that is written by Jeff Apter. In this book it talks about Shirl's upbringing in Mt Waverley, did an carpentry trade, an surfie, being in an band called Frame with Greg Macainsh future founding member of Skyhooks along with Imans(freddie) Stauks , joined Skyhooks in March 1974 which he would be with them until 1978 and would be on the classic albums like Living In the 70's, Ego Is Not A Dirty Word, Straight In A gay Gay World and guilty until proven insane as well as the hit singles Horror Movie, All MY friends Are Getting married, Million Dollar Riff, Blue Jeans, Ego Is Not A Dirty Word, Women in Uniform and others as well as having solo hit Every Little Bit Hurts in 1976, going into successful ventures hosting the kids show Shirl's Neighbourhood from 1979-83, presenter on the home reno show Our House on Channel 9, an radio Disk Jockey as well his tragic death in an helicopter crash on August 29th 2001 and many others . It's an BRILLIANT book and with great stories which Jeff Apter who co wrote the Autobiographies of Mark Evans(AC/DC) and KAsey chambers as well as writing
the biographies of Marc Hunter of Dragon, The Finn Brothers, Keith Urban etc does an BRILLIANT job putting this book together with the support of the Strachan Family, surviving Skyhooks members and high profile friend like daryl Braithwaite, NRL legend Gary Belcher, Trevor Hendy and others which it's the first biography of Shirl. It's hard to believe it's 11 years since Shirl's passing but at least the music of Skyhooks live on. This book is an must for any Skyhooks fans as well as his TV work and also fans of the 70's and I hope you enjoy reading this book. i give this 5 stars and it's in the shops now.
