This week's classic album segment is this time an Australian one released in 1971 which it was the 3rd album by rock group the Masters Apprentices. The group were formed in Adelaide in 1965 originally called the Mustangs with Jim Keays(vocals),Mick Bower(Rhythm guitar), Rick morrison(lead guitar), Gavin Webb(Bass) and Brian Vaughton(drums) and who had played around Adelaide at places like the Beat Basement began recording with Astor Records in late 1966 which they had hits like Undecided, Buried and Dead, Living In A CHild's Dream and Elevator Driver and also during the early success one by one most of the original guys from the Adelaide line up left as had different musicians replacing them including Peter Tillbrook, Tony Sommers, Steve Hopgood before settling with the well known line up with Jim Keays, DOug FOrd, Colin Burgess and Glenn Wheatley(whom all joined in 1968). it was the line up with Jim, Glenn, Colin and doug that had more success with 5.10 Man, Think About tomorrow today and Turn Up Radio and it was that line up that record the album Choice Cuts. the Masters left Australia in May 1970 as they were going to ENgland to try to get an crack internationally which they went on the boat Fairsky that lasted 6 weeks and were writing stuff that were to be on the Choice Cuts album and arrived In London whuch they stayed in an flat in London where they rehearsed and writing as well as checking out the clubs and concerts. The Masters recorded the album that was to be cHOICE Cuts at Abbey Road studios iN September 1970 with Jeff Jarratt producing who had worked with the Beatles and enigneer Peter Bown who had worked with Pink FLoyd with John Kurlander as enigneer also and also the recording lasted an month which the band were thrilled with the results. The album was released in April 1971 which went to number 11 on the Australian album charts and it received great reviews in England and EUrope which EMI AUstralia had paid for the band to record @ Abbey ROad and it was around that time that the Masters Apprentices to do an tour of Australia. From the album had the hit single BEcause I love You which went to no 12 in Australia and it's an classic song that still endures after all these years that was inspired by being far away from the people back in Australia which it is one of Australia's great rock classics. It's an BRILLIANT and an excellent album which sounds great today after 41 years and the band were really at their peak with Jim kEays and Doug Ford writing great songs which besides from Because I Love You there a lot of great songs like Rio DeCamero, Easy to Lie, Death Of A King(inspired by the death of civil rights leader MArtin Luther King), SOng For a Lost Gypsy(inspired by the death of guitarist Jimi Hendrix which Jim keays were in Copenhagen when he heard the sad news), Catty and other great tracks which playing on the album were LArry Steel playing congas on Rio De Camero and Claude Lintott playing Jews Harp on I'm Your Satisfier and also Jeff Jarratt played on Paul Mc Cartney's white grand piano Because I Love You. This is one of Australia's great rock albums and it's an classic and an mAsterpiece indeed
