Classic Albums- Younger than Yesterday The Byrds

For this week's classic album segment let's have a look at the 1967 album by AMerican group The Byrds called Younger Than Yesterday. By this time in 1967 the Byrds were had already being already successful with hits like Mr Tambourine Man, All I Really Want to Do, Turn Turn Turn, Set You free This Time, Eight Miles High, 5D and Mr Spaceman and had been through an line up change in 1966 with the departure of tambourine, singer and main songwriter Gene Clark which the group became an quartet. The recordings of their 4th album that would become Younger Than Yesterday began on November 28th 1966 @ Columbia Studios in Hollywood which lasted for 11 days until December 8th 1966 and the album was released on February 6th 1967 which went to number 24 in the USA and no 37 in the UK which it was produced by gary Usher who had co wrote songs with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys back in the early 60's for a time as well as producing Gene Clark's debut solo album Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers and would produced 2 more Byrds albums Notorious Byrd Brothers and Sweetheart Of The Rodeo which I did an classic segment with that in 2011. From this album it had 3 hit singles-So You want To Be A Rock n Roll Star (US no 29) written by ROger McGuinn and Chris Hillman which it was inspired by the success of the Monkees which Hugh Masekela an South African musician played horns and the screams on it were actually taped at a show @ Bournemouth in 1965 during the group's UK tour by their publicist Derek Taylor who had been the publicist for the Beatles and the Beach Boys, My back Pages(number 30 USA)the Bob Dylan song which it was their last US top 40 hit and Dylan had done it on the 1964 album Another Side Of Bob Dylan and Have you Seen Her Face (no 74 USA) written by Chris Hillman which Roger McGuinn played Grestch guitar on it and it was the official last album for David Crosby who was fired from the group in October 1967 after an long nearly fatal war of wills even though he is on some of the tracks on the Notorious Byrd Brothers album. It is an great album with great songs which still endures to this day and the surprise highlight of the album was the emergence of Chris Hillman as an singer-songwriter besides from SO you want To Be A Rock N Roll Star and Have You Seen Her Face he wrote Time Between, The Girl With No name (both had Clarence White playing on it) and Thoughts and Words as well as great songwriting by David Crosby including Everybody's Been Burned(B Side To So You want To be A Rock N Roll) which it's an lovely song and Renaissance Fair etc. This album is one of my favorite Byrds albums and it is one of the best albums they made which it has maturity and essential quality as well.
