Classic ALbums- Bee Gees 1st The Bee Gees

For this week's classic album segment let's have an look at the first international album for the Bee Gees in 1967 called Bee Gees 1st. On January 3rd 1967 the Bee Gees Barry, robin and Maurice Gibb with their family left Australia after spending nearly 9 years there where they lived in brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney and had recorded for Leedon and Spin labels which they released 13 singles that included 2 hits "Wine and WOmen" top 30 1965 and the big one Spicks and Specks no 1 in Australia 1966 which was also number 1 in New Zealand as well as 2 albums The Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs and Spicks and Specks and prior of leaving Australia the Gibb's father Hugh has sent demos to NEMS an music store in England which was owned by Brian Epstein who was the manager for the BEatles which he passed the demos to Robert Stigwood who was an Australian originally from Adelaide who had been living in England since 1955 and had been promoting concerts as well as producing with Joe Meek and managing people like Mike Searne, John Leyton,Mike Berry and Cream etc. The Bee Gees did an audition with Stigwood @ the Saville Theater which led them to being signed up the Polydor Records for 5 years. The recording for the album that was to be Bee Gees 1st began @ IBC studios in London on March 7th 1967 and lasted until April 14th and it was released on July 14th 1967 in England and on August 9th 1967 in the USA on the Atco label which went to number 8 in the UK, number 7 in the USA, number 4 in germany and number 10 in Australia. This was produced by Robert Stigwood and Ossie Byrne an Australian who had worked with the Bee Gees in Hurtsville an suburb in Sydney an year before which he had an recording studio at the back of his butcher shop and had came with the Gibbs on the boat back to England and on the album that 3 hit singles-New York Mining Disaster 1941(no 12 UK,no 14 USA and number 11 Australia), To Love Somebody (no 41 in the UK,number 17 in the USA and number 6 in Australia) and Holiday (Number 16 USA). It is an excellent album which holds up very well today with great songs which still endures today and besides from the 3 hit singles there are other great ones like Craise Finton Kirk which Australian singer Johnny Young had an hit with it in 1967, In Our Own Time, Turn Of the Century ,Red Chair Fade Away and many others and also there were more Australian connections as Bill Shepherd did the orchestral arrangements which he had known the Gibbs in Australia, joining on drums was Colin Peterson who was an former child actor who had been in the movie Smiley in 1956 and had been playing in the Australian group Steve and The Board(Giggle Eyed Goo) as well as playing with the Gibbs @ hurtsville in 1966 and on guitar was Vince Melouney who had played with the original line of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs(1963-65) that did Poison Ivy,Mashed Potato,Sick and Tired and Over the Rainbow as well as Blue Day as well as Vince and TOny's two, the Vince Melouney Sect and the Blue jays who backed up Australian singer Tony WOrsley. Klaus Voorman who was playing with British group Manfred Mann and had done the cover on the Beatles album Revolver the year before did the Bee Gees First cover which looks great and Phil Dennys did the orchestral arrangements as well. It will be 1 year ago on Monday since the passing of Robin Gibb and 10 years since Maurice's sad passing but their work lives on which i thought it would be appropriate to do this dedicated to them.
