Classic Albums-The Notorious Byrd Brothers the Byrds

For this week's classic album let's have a look at the 1968 album by American rock group The Byrds called the Notorious Byrd Brothers. The recording of the album was held @ Columbia Studios in Hollywood,California from June 21st-December 6th 1967 and it was released on January 3rd 1968 which it went to number 47 in the USA and number 12 in the UK. Gary Usher who produced the Younger Than Yesterday album was the producer for this album and the single from this album Goin Back an cover of the Dusty Springfield UK top 10 hit in 1966 written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The other material on the album were written by Roger Mcguinn, David Crosby and Chris Hillman wrote Natural Harmony and it was during the recording of the album that David Crosby was fired in October as there had been tensions and frictions as he refused to sing on Goin Back as well as his song Traid was in competition with Goin Back for a place on the album which Jefferson Airplane did a version of it on the Crown Of Creation album and Michael Clarke who had left previously due to disputes with the other members over his playing ability as well as the material the members writing left in December as well as Gene Clark who had left the Byrds in 1966 had returned to the group but lasted only 3 weeks. It is a great album with great songs which holds up so well to this day with great harmonies and great sounds which one of the tracks I like to Dolphin's Smile which Roger McGuinn does the sound effects as it was his fingernails on the neck of the Rickenbacker guitar doing the noise at the beginning of the song BRILLIANT and despite the tensions, serve internal dissolution and acrimony the group pulled it off brilliantly despite the line-up changes which by the time it was completed only McGuinn and Hillman were the remaining founding members. Among the session musicians who played on the album were Jim Gordon who did the drumming on Goin Back, Clarence White who would join the Byrds in 1968, Red Rhodes, Paul Beaver etc. It is 50 years when the Byrds were formed as well as 41 years when they broke but are still an influence to many groups to this day as well as their music still gets a lot of airplay to this day and this album is one of the best albums ever made so be sure to get it as it is still in the shops somewhere in the world to this day.
