Classic Album- The Beach Boys Today

It has been 3 and bit months since I last did the classic album segment and now it's back so let's have a look at the 1965 album by the Beach boys called The Beach Boys Today. By the end of 1964 the Beach Boys were one of the top groups along with the Beatles having successful top 10 hits including the US number 1 hit I Get Around which was at the height of Beatlemania as well as having 4 albums released that year and touring including Australia, New Zealand and Europe and it was on December 23rd 1964 that musical leader Brian Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown on the plane going to Texas as he was physically and emotionally exhausted which it would eventually led Brian to stop touring and focus his attention on creating and producing music which he told the other members in January 1965 during the recording of a album that would be The Beach Boys Today and his spot on the road was taken for a time by session musician Glen Campbell who would eventually become a huge successful country singer which eventually that was taken by Bruce Johnston who had worked with producer Terry melcher in the group The Rip Chords. The recording of that album began in 1964 on June 22nd-October 9th and December 16th and January 7th-19th 1965 @ united Western Recorders and Gold Star Studios in California and it was released on March 8th 1965 which it went to number in the USA where it stayed in the charts for 50 weeks and number 6 in the UK when it was released in 1966. This album was the start of change of their music as they were going away from the surf and car songs they had been used to more mature type of songs that would eventually lead to Pet Sounds the following year and Brian's approach to sophisticated orchestral sounds as well as the vocal and instrumental arrangements with the complex Wall Of Sound. It is a excellent album which holds up very well today and the songs are great which among them were the 4 hits When I Grow UP To Be A Man, Dance Dance Dance, DO You Wanna Dance with Dennis Wilson on lead vocals and Please Let me Wonder as well as gems like In the Back of My Mind also with Dennis on lead vocals, comedy fuller track Bull Session with the Big Daddy and the first version of Help Me Rhonda which it was a different arrangement to the well known version which went to number 1 on may 29th 1965. Brian Wilson produced the album and the musicians playing on it were the Wrecking Crew which among them were Hal Blaine on Drums, Carol Kaye on bass, Glen Campbell on guitar, Larry Knecthel on bass etc and also Chuck Britz did the engineering. This album is one of my favourite albums which I bought it in the city on Wednesday September 3rd 1997 2 days after my 19th birthday and I loved it then still love it today and it still in the shops so be sure to buy it which I'm sure you will enjoy it.
