Classic Movies- The Wild One (1953)

For this week's classic have a look at the 1953 bikie film  The Wild One.  Johnny Stabler (Marlon Brando) who leads an bikie gang called The Black Rebels Motorcycle Club invades an small town of Wrightsville California and falls in love with the good girl named Kathie Bleeker (Mary Murphy) whose father Harry(Robert Keith)  and then an rival gang led by Chino(Lee Marvin) who has an grudge against Johnny  and then the gangs wreck the town as well as the hostility and prejudices of the townspeople which gets interesting. It's an classic movie as well as FANTASTIC with FANTASTIC acting by Marlon Brando, Mary Murphy, Robert Keith and Lee Marvin in one of his early movie roles. It was based on the short story  by Frank Rooney called the Cyclists Raid which his story was inspired by an real life incident in 1947 on the 4th of July Weekend in Hollister California that got out of hand during an American Motorcyclist Association rally which the overcrowding, drinking and street stunting was given national attention in Life magazine. The movie was released in the US December 30th 1953 but was banned in Britain for 14 years by the British Board of Film Censorship  even though there were some screenings in the film societies where local councils overturned the decision. It received an X certificate on November 21st 1967 and the general public in the UK saw it at the 59 Club in Paddington, London in 1968. The movie holds up very well to this day and an reflection of the era when an lot of young people were rebelling as well as Brando's persona in the film would the influential image of the 50's  and the haircut would influence people like Elvis Presley and James Dean and also the bikie gang named Beetles would influence the Beatles for the name.  It was produced by Stanley Kramer and directed by Laszlo Benedek. This film is considered the original outlaw bikie film and there is an DVD out there in the shops so do yourselves an favour and BUY IT which you will be amazed.
