classic albums- Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko ono

This week's classic album segment is the 1980 album Double Fantasy by John Lennon & Yoko Ono . In 1975 after the birth of his son Sean John Lennon decided to put his music career on hold to raise him and after the 5 year break besides from the occasional recording in his apartment as well as playing on the song Cookin(In the Kitchen Of Love) that was on ringo starr's solo album Ringo's Rotogravure in 1976 and creating an series of drawings and drafted an book that was a mix of autobiographical material and what he called mad stuff Lennon was ready to get back to work as his ambition was to do something as good as the 1977 album heroes by David Bowie. Lennon began writing songs while going on an trip to Bermuda that would reflected his fulfilment in his new found stable family life and those songs were to be on both the album that would become Double Fantasy and Mike and Honey. Recordings for Double Fantasy began on August 4th 1980 @ the Hit Factory in New York which lasted until late September 1980 with Jack Douglas, John Lennon and Yoko Ono producing the album and it was an album that was an collection of songs wherein husband and wife would conduct an musical dialogue. Double Fantasy was released on the Geffen label on November 17th 1980 and an month before the single Just Like Starting Over was released which would go to number 1 in the USA,UK and Australia. the album was initially poorly received but then tragically 3 weeks later on Monday December 8th 1980 John Lennon was shot and killed by crazed fan Mark Chapman and it jumped to the top of the charts in the USA on December 27th 1980 where it stayed for 8 weeks, no 1 in the UK for 2 weeks and no 1 in Australia and 2 more hits singles from the album were Woman and Watching the Wheels and also won an grammy for album of the year in 1981. It's an excellent album which holds up very well and great songs which are so beautiful including BEautiful Boy, Kiss Kiss Kiss, Beautiful Boys, Hard Times Are Over and others and John and Yoko work well excellently on this album as it was their 2nd duo album since Some Time In New York City in 1972 and Double Fantasy came at the time when John came back with a force and was to be an new beginning for John but sadly was'nt to be but the music still lives on and endures to this day.
