Classic Albums- More of the monkees by the Monkees
For this week's classic album segment let's have an look at the 1967 album by the Monkees called More of the Monkees which it was their second album. It was by this time that Monkeemania had reached full swing having done their very first gig in Hawaii on December 3rd 1966 as well as the success of the TV series and had already having 2 hit singles Last Train To Clarksville which was an number 1 in the USA and the 2nd single had been released at that time I"m A Believer written by Neil Diamond which would be number in the USA on New Years Eve 1966 where it would stay for 7 weeks, no 1 in the UK and Australia. The recording for More Of The Monkees began from June until November 1966 @ RCA Victor New York, American Studios @ Studio City, Western Recorders in Hollywood, RCA Studios in Hollywood and an studio in New York and on January 9th 1967 the album was released which it went to number 1 in the USA where it stayed there for 18 weeks which it knocked the group's first album The Monkees where it stayed got 13 weeks and the UK for 2 weeks which it quintuple platnium which it has sold 5 million copies . the group were playing in Cleveland when the album was released which they were not very happy with the cover image of them as well as the liner notes done by music supervisor Don Kirshner praising the songwriters before mentioning the names of the band as a afterthought almost as well as Mike Nesmith was not happy about the songs on it and also the group were concerned about their musical output which since the first 2 albums had them doing vocals with scattered instrumental contributions which led to issues that would happen at the time which i had mentioned it on the Headquarters segment last year. The producers on the album were Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart,Neil Sedaka, Carol Bayer Sager, Mike Nesmith, Jeff Barry, Jack keller,Gerry Goffin and Carole King and among the musicians were Larry Taylor who went on to play with American blues band Canned Heat, future country singer Glen Campbell on guitar, legendary guitarist James Burton, al Casey on Guitar, Gerry McGee future member of the Ventures on guitar, Louie shelton also on Guitar and many others. It's an excellent album with great songs that still endure to this day which besides from I'm A Believer had I'm Not Your Stepping Stone which was the b side to I'm A Believer, 2 songs written by Mike Nesmith Mary Mary which was an hit only in 1968 in Australia and the Kind Of Girl I Could Love which he wrote that with ROger Atkins who had written It's My Life which the Animals had the hit in 1965, Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow written by Neil Diamond, Sometime In the Morning written by Gerry Goffin and Carole KIng, Your auntie Grizelda with Peter Tork on lead vocals and many others. It's been an year since the sad passing of Davy Jones and I thought it would be appropriate to tribute to him by doing this album which it is still in the shops to this day.
