Classic Albums- Please Please Me The Beatles
This week's Classic Album segment let's have a look at the debut album from 1963 by the Beatles called Please Please Me. The Beatles who began as the Quarrymen in 1957 in Liverpool which they changed to the Beatles in 1960 having played in Hamburg and Liverpool like the Cavern and had began recording with the first single that was Love Me Do that was released in October 1962 which went to 17 in the UK and their second single was Please Please Me which had been released in January 1963 that went to number 2 in the UK. The recording of the Please Please Me album was at the Abbey Road Studios on February 11th 1963 @ 10am which it was recorded in one day that lasted 9 hours and 45 minutes later and the album was released in the UK on March 22nd 1963 which it went to number 1 where it stayed there for 30 weeks. Producer was George Martin who had been recording @ Parlophone since 1950 and had been producing comedy records with people like the Goons, Rolf Harris, Joan Sims and he would be producer until their break up in 1970. Besides from the 2 hits the other songs are mixture of original songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney including I saw Her Standing there, Misery which was actually intended for British pop singer Helen Shapiro with whom the Beatles had toured with at that time but producer Norrie Paramour thought it was unsuitable so British singer Kenny Lynch who was on that same tour with them and Helen Shapiro did an version instead which he was the first singer to cover an Lennon McCartney song and covers which had been an part of their stage act that included 2 Shirelles songs Baby It's You and Boys with Ringo on lead vocals, Twist and Shout which was actually the last song for that session and others. It is 50 years this weekend since this album was released and it's sounds great as well as the songs on it are just as great today as it was back then and also Angus McBean did the photo cover that was taken in Manchester Square @ EMI's London Headquarters. I love this album which I bought the CD in July 1995 @ Chandlers Cannon Hill and I still enjoy listening to the album to this day.
