Classic Albums- Gentle On My Mind Glen Campbell

For this week's classic album segment let's have a look at the 1967 album by legendary American country singer Glen Campbell called Gentle on My Mind. The recording of the album was at Capitol Recording Studios in Hollywood, California from May 17th-July 13th 1967 and it was released in August 1967 which it went to number 5 in the USA pop album charts where it stayed there for 75 weeks and number 1 on the USA country album charts where it stayed in the charts for 88 weeks and also number 3 in Canada which the album went Platinum. The album was produced by Al De Lory who produced Glen's album before this one called Burning Bridges and would produce Glen's albums up to 1972 and the title track was the only hit single from that album which went to number 66 in the USA pop charts and no 30 in the US country charts but when it was released in 1968 it went to number 39 in the pop charts again and also the songs won 2 Grammy awards which were Best Country Song and Best country vocal performance for Male as well as getting the ACM award for Male Vocalist For the Year. It is a excellent album with great songs and a great sound and it holds up very well today and besides from the title track there are great stuff including Just Another Man written by Glen and Joe Allison as well as covers including You're My World, It's Over, Catch the Wind, Bowling Green which had been a Top 40 US hit for the Everly Brothers in that same year and many others. Up to that time in 1967 Glen Campbell had only some success as a singer as he had only a few minor hits including Turn Around Look AT me in 1961 and Universal Soldier in 1965 as well as being a session musician as well as being part of the Wrecking Crew as well as playing on records by acts including the Monkees, Frank Sinatra's Strangers In the Night, Dean Martin, Jan and Dean and many others as well as touring Beach Boy when Brian Wilson quit the road after his nervous Breakdown which he only lasted 3 months as well as working with the Champs (Tequila) and also worked on music shows like shindig,Star Route and Hollywood Jamboree and had been recording for Capitol since 1962 which by the time Gentle on My Mind came out in 1967 he had released 5 albums but not charted and it was from 1967 onwards he would go on to great success with more hit records and albums as well as hosting his own TV show and doing mvoes as well. This album is still in the shops somewhere and be sure to BUY IT as I'm sure you will enjoy listening to it.
